Spanish-language film nominated for a BAFTA
The Snow Society is up for the best foreign language film award next month
The Snow Society, or La sociedad de la nieve, by Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, is one of five nominees for best foreign language film at the British Film Academy’s 2024 BAFTA Awards.
The 2023 survival thriller centres around the Uruguayan 1972 Andes air disaster, when Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team and its families to Chile, crashed into a glacier. The harrowing movie documents the fight for survival of the passengers in one of the most inhospitable and hostile environments imaginable.
La sociedad de la nieve was released to universal acclaim and will battle it out for the win against the Ukrainian documentary 20 days in Mariupol, the French film Anatomy of a Fall, the British film The Zone of Interest and the American film Past Lives.
Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Oppenheimer has emerged as the favourite, earning 13 nominations, including best film, director and actor for Cillian Murphy's powerful performance.
The film, which tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, has been widely praised for its thought-provoking themes, stunning visuals, and gripping narrative. It has already won numerous awards, including several Critics' Choice Awards and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Nolan, who is known for his ambitious and intellectually stimulating films, has previously won several BAFTAs for his work, including Best Director for Inception and Interstellar.
To the surprise of many, Oppenheimer's box office rival Barbie received just five nominations and was notably snubbed in the Best Film category.
The 77th edition of the BAFTAs will take place at the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 18, with David Tennant hosting.
