ARCHIVED - Spanish suspected serial killer hands himself in to police
The Columbian national is wanted for up to eight murders in Spain
Nelson David MB, a 25-year-old Columbian, was this week one of the most wanted men in Spain until he handed himself into police custody in Bilbao in northern Spain on Thursday May 5. The suspect was wanted in connection with at least four murders, and has been linked to as many as four more, and according to official sources turned up voluntarily at the Basque Country station when he realised he was the subject of a manhunt.
Nelson, who has evaded capture since December, allegedly used the alias ‘Carlos’ to contact members of the gay community through dating websites such as Wapo and Grindr. He then reportedly went to the homes of his victims, administered lethal doses of liquid ecstasy, and plundered their bank accounts.
“He may not only have acted in Bilbao, but in other parts of the Basque County and perhaps in Spain because he has moved around a lot,” a source close to the investigation explained.
For his part, Nelson denies any responsibility in the serial killings and claims he only turned himself in when he saw his details circulating online. The investigators, however, are in no doubt that they have a serial murderer on their hands, whether or not it turns out to be the suspect in custody.
It has transpired that the Columbian requested asylum in 2019 but was denied, and so has since been living irregularly in Spain. Moreover, he has a criminal record as he was arrested that same year for fraud.
For now, the suspect remains in custody and the Bilbao judge has asked that the proceedings be kept secret, so no official photos or his full identity have been released.
