ARCHIVED - Storm Franklin puts 5 communities in Spain on orange alert
Strong winds and swelling waves are expected across northern Spain on Monday February 21
The arrival of storm Franklin on Monday February 21 brings to three the number of violent squalls that have battered Europe over the past week, and five communities in Spain have been put on orange alert due to strong winds and rough seas.
Last week, storm Dudley wrought tragedy on the Galician fishing trawler Villa de Pitanxo and over the weekend, while storm Eunice did little more than lower the temperatures across Spain, the results were much more dramatic in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe.
Monday has dawned bright and clear in much of Spain with the mercury returning to above average for this time of year after plummeting by up to 15ºC over the weekend, but Aemet has now activated an orange alert in five northern communities for intense maritime storms with waves of up to seven metres predicted.
Sunny skies and rising temperatures notwithstanding, the southern part of Spain will not escape completely unscathed either, with the province of Castellón in the Valencian Community on yellow alert for strong winds. Andalucía has also been issued with a yellow alert until mid-morning on February 21 due to coastal phenomena on the Cádiz coast and in the Strait, where a force 7 easterly wind will blow.
In Europe, Franklin has left almost 30,000 people in the United Kingdom and Ireland without electricity on Monday as a result of the strong winds that hit the northwest of the island, with gusts that have approached 140 kilometres per hour. Storm Eunice also left more than 80,000 homes and businesses without power in this country.
