Storm Kirk churns out giant tuna and monstrous calamari along beaches in Spain
An enormous tuna, weighing more than 300 kilos, washed up on Poniente beach in Benidorm
The fury of Storm Kirk has brought more than just strong winds and heavy rain to the coasts of Spain. In a bizarre and fascinating turn of events, the storm has churned up some of the ocean's most mysterious and massive creatures, leaving beachgoers in awe.
In Benidorm, a gargantuan tuna, weighing more than 300 kilograms, was washed up on Poniente beach after being spotted swimming close to the shore the day before.
The enormous fish, which was later transferred to a municipal plot for disposal, was just one of several marine animals to make an unexpected appearance on Spanish shores.
Meanwhile, in the northwest of Spain, a giant squid was spotted on Sablón beach in Llanes, Asturias. The massive cephalopod, which was later identified as an Architeuthis Dux, is a rare and elusive species that is rarely seen in these waters.
According to Luis Laria, president of the Coordinator for the Study and Protection of Marine Species (Cepesma), this giant squid is extremely shy and rarely seen outside of the waters of the Cantabrian Sea and New Zealand.
But that's not all - in Sanxenxo, a whale washed up on the beach, dragged in by the storm. The enormous specimen, which weighed around 15 tonnes and measured 18 metres in length, was later removed by a specialised company.
The appearance of these marine giants has left experts and beachgoers alike in wonder.
"It's like something out of a Jules Verne novel," Mr Laria exclaimed, referring to the French author's famous tale of the giant squid in ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’.
