ARCHIVED - Storms on the horizon without any let-up in the heat: Spain weather outlook August 8-11
Most of Spain will remain in the mid-30s all week with high temperatures expected to persist until mid-August
Spain enters the second week of August with virtually no let-up in the high temperatures, although the heatwave officially ended at the weekend, and some locally strong storms are even forecast in the Pyrenees in the coming days.
The suffocating heat, which has ranged between 3 and 10 degrees above normal, is expected to persist day and night until at least the middle of the week, with a strong probability that the mercury will begin to climb once more as we approach the weekend.
According to the predictions of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), "unusually high temperatures for the time" will last "at least until mid-August in most of the north and centre of the peninsula, the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands".
There is also a warning of the risk of dry storms in the Pyrenees and in a large part of Aragón and inland Castellón, which carry a huge fire risk and could be accompanied by gusts of wind and hail.
According to Aemet, between Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9, the thermometers will easily exceed 35 or 36ºC in the north of Spain, the centre of the country, and along the southern Mediterranean coast.
The Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys will again reach boiling point at the beginning of the week, averaging between 38 and 40ºC in the middle of the day, while on the Mediterranean coast, the temperatures won’t dip below the mid 30s in Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante.
Four communities (Aragón, Navarra, Madrid and Catalonia) are again on yellow alert for high temperatures on Wednesday August 10, while an upper-level depression off the coast of Portugal will create some instability, leading to cloudy skies in a large part of the country and possible showers and storms in mountain areas of the north.
Further south, the thermometers will remain at around 35ºC as the night-time temperatures continue their general rise, with the exception of the Canary Islands, where the minimums will take a slight dip.
Looking ahead to Thursday August 11 and very little change is expected, with a cloudy start predicted for the Mediterranean coast and the extreme south, becoming more overcast in the Strait and the Andalucian Atlantic coast. Day-time temperatures will remain in the mid to high 30s for the most part in the south.
