Storms on the way as Spanish heatwave comes to an end: Spain weather forecast Aug 24-27
At the end of the weekend the temperatures will plummet across Spain with heavy rain and stormy episodes on the horizon
The month of August roared in with one heatwave and has ended with another, but meteorologists are forecasting a dramatic switch to more autumnal weather this weekend. Over the coming days, according to Meteored, an approaching polar jet will drop over Spain, thus effectively ending the current hot spell.
Moreover, next week will bring some heavy rain and fairly intense storms, but most of these will be concentrated in northern Spain, in the east and points of the Balearic Islands.
"The good news is that temperatures will likely remain contained, and could even be below average for a few days in several regions," the experts concluded.
For now though, the temperatures will remain sky-high and several communities are on red alert for suffocating heat on Thursday August 24. Nighttime temperatures will decline sharply in the west but during the day the mercury will continue to climb inland and in the southeast, reaching the high 30s and even the low 40s in places.
Slightly cloudy or clear skies are expected in most of the country. However, in Galicia and the western Cantabrian Sea, cloud cover will increase from the coast due to an approaching Atlantic front that could bring weak rainfall at the end of the day.
Red alert for high temperatures: Aragon, Navarra, La Rioja.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Basque Country.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Galicia, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community.
Storm Betty will sweep in from the Atlantic on Friday August 25, bringing plenty of rain and overcast skies to northern Spain and some cloudy intervals in the south as well. The rest of the country will be mostly clear although the cloud clover will increase in the east of the country in the late afternoon.
There’s a good chance of showers and storms late in the day in mountainous areas of the northeast and southeast.
The temperatures will drop sharply in the north of Spain but will climb once more in the far south and inland southeast. Much of southern Spain will hover around 34-36ºC on Friday while nighttime temperatures in the Mediterranean won’t fall below 24-26ºC.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencian Community.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Region of Murcia.
Storm Betty will persist into Saturday August 26 resulting in unstable weather with abundant cloudiness and rainfall across Spain. The north will again bear the brunt but the showers and stormy intervals will likely spread to the east of the country later on, and the rain could be very heavy in points of Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the south in general.
Rising temperatures in the extreme south with an almost general decrease in the rest of the country, most notably in the northwest. Nevertheless, the mercury is expected to exceed 35ºC in the south and southeast, Mallorca and parts of the Canary Islands, even reaching 40ºC in the Guadalquivir.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Castilla-La Mancha, Region of Murcia.
No weather alerts have been issued for Sunday August 27 but the ongoing storm will bring heavy rain and plenty of cloud cover to northeast Spain and the Balearic Islands. There’s still a great deal of uncertainty about how the storm will evolve but at the moment, meteorologists are forecasting particularly strong squalls and even hailstorms in Catalonia and the Balearics.
Daytime temperatures will drop practically across the board, with thermometers falling from 40ºC in the Guadalquivir to just 32 or 34ºC.
