Stormy showers and plunging temperatures: Spain weather forecast April 18-21
An incoming DANA will bring rain to southern Spain and plummeting temperatures in most of the country
Minimum and maximum temperatures expected on Friday April 19
Temperatures are set to continue dropping across much of Spain until the weekend, with forecasts predicting frost in certain regions, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
After a very balmy few days with summery temperatures in many areas, an approaching DANA cold blast is forecast over the weekend which could end the pleasant spell in southern Spain and leave stormy showers in its wake instead.
Minimum temperatures are expected to fall throughout the country on Thursday night, April 18, dipping well below 5ºC in many areas of the north and east, particularly inland. Cities such as Teruel could come close to experiencing freezing conditions.
However, warmer temperatures can be expected in the likes of Córdoba and Sevilla, with highs of approximately 28ºC.
Rainfall is unlikely in the northeastern part of the country, although the showers are predicted to persist in eastern Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, gradually dissipating towards the afternoon. Strong winds are anticipated in the north of the country and the Balearic Islands, where weather alerts have been issued.
By Friday April 19, temperatures are set to plummet even further, resulting in freezing conditions overnight in mountainous regions, sections of the northern plateau and inland Spain.
Nevertheless, temperatures are expected to rise significantly during the day in the northern half of the country, and large chunks of the extreme south will still see the thermometers climb into the high 20s.
Strong, gusty winds are also set to continue, and parts of Andalucía, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia have been issued with yellow weather warnings.
Over the weekend, a DANA storm is forecast to develop over the Atlantic, which could result in very unstable weather and increased cloud cover in the south of the country. But as always with these weather phenomena, Aemet is still very uncertain about how it will develop.
According to current predictions, this system may bring scattered stormy showers to parts of Extremadura, Andalucía and Melilla, whereas the northern half of Spain and the Balearic Islands should anticipate dry and partly cloudy weather.
On Saturday April 20, daytime temperatures are projected to recover, with many areas exceeding 25ºC in the afternoon. This will be especially true of southern Spain, and the Guadalquivir valley is even tipped to hit 30ºC.
Looking ahead to Sunday April 21 and more changes are afoot. While most of the country, aside from southern Spain, should remain dry, it will be largely overcast overall.
Daytime temperatures are also expected to take another dip in much of the Mediterranean area and Andalucía.
Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo has indicated that the mercury will continue to fall across the board next week, and while “there is still uncertainty”, it looks like the south of Spain, as well north and eastern parts, are in for more stormy intervals from Monday April 22.
