Street awnings installed in Murcia city centre to combat the heat
The 73 canvasses stretch between the Murcia buildings to provide as much shade as possible
Work began this week on installing 73 awnings in Murcia city centre with the aim of combatting the punishing summer heat. The canvasses are designed to stretch across entire streets, between buildings, to provide shoppers and workers with as much shade as possible.
Announcing the project, Councillor for Urban Development Jose Guillen regretted the fact that the awnings are being installed so late in the summer, and blamed the delay on "the negligent management of the previous Socialist Government Team, which had blocked this contract, like so many others" and "did not lift a finger" to ensure they were in place during the earlier heatwaves.
In total, the Murcia City Council is going to place 73 awnings in the streets of San Cristóbal, Platería, Trapería and in the José Esteve Mora, Joufre and Puxmarina squares. Councillor Sofía López-Briones reiterated that these facilities "are very necessary at this time of the year to favour the transit of pedestrians, in order to combat the high temperatures, activate the commerce of the area and tourism in the centre in full summer season."
The work will take three days and will be carried out at night to avoid the high daytime temperatures and inconvenience to local businesses.
The awnings come in many different sizes to adapt to the streets and buildings, but all are connected with 6mm steel cables and 40mm carabiners at the vertices to guarantee that they are secure. Once the canvasses are in place they are stretched tight to avoid any creases or droops.
