Summer weather continues until midweek: Spain forecast June 24
On Wednesday, a new DANA will bring heavy downpours and generally unsettled weather to half of Spain
As much of Europe swelters under a heatwave, Spain is enjoying a slight reprieve from the extreme temperatures. The week ahead promises a mix of sunny skies and changing weather patterns, with rain promising to make an appearance in a couple of days.
Kicking off the week, Spain will experience a stable atmosphere with a rise in daytime temperatures across the northern half of the country. However, this summery weather won’t last forever. Come Wednesday, a new weather system will make its way across the country, bringing with it a dramatic change.
Known as a DANA, this weather system will result in heavy downpours and unsettled conditions to half of Spain.
Monday June 24 will bring hotter temperatures to the north, with a yellow warning for high temperatures in Andalucía and Extremadura. In fact, much of the Atlantic southwest will see values of between 34 and 38ºC on the thermometers.
Most of Spain can expect partly cloudy skies with a few isolated showers here and there that shouldn’t cause any problems.
The winds will be blowing from various directions, with a mix of easterly and northerly winds, and stronger gusts along the coasts.
Then, as Tuesday June 25 rolls in, a new chapter begins. A fresh DANA will be released to the northwest of Galicia, bringing with it a dramatic increase in cloud cover. Afternoon rain will quickly develop into storms in northern Spain, which could “be locally intense and accompanied by hail and thunderstorms,” according to meteorologist Mario Picazo.
The real effects of this front will be felt from Wednesday June 26, when the temperatures will drop in most parts and Spain will become much cooler than usual for the end of June. Suspended dust will once again hover over the south of the country and the intense rain in the north shows signs of spreading to mountainous areas of Andalucía, although it will be much weaker.
As usual, it’s still not clear how the DANA will play out this far ahead, but for the moment the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) believes Thursday June 27 will be very overcast in the entire country. Rain is far less likely in southwest Spain, but showers haven’t been ruled out.
Although the distribution of winds and temperatures will depend on the final position of DANA, it looks like daytime temperatures will take another dip in most of Spain, with the exception of the northeast and the Balearic Islands.
