ARCHIVED - Suspected terrorist arrested in Barcelona linked to 2020 Charlie Hebdo Paris attack
A total of 15 people have been arrested between Spain and Italy in a coordinated terrorist round-up
Police in Barcelona have arrested a suspect wanted in Italy in connection with the September 2020 attack in Paris near the former headquarters of the infamous satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.
The suspect had a European Arrest and Surrender Order (OEDE) in force for terrorist activities in Italy and the arrest was carried out in the Spanish town of Hospitalet de Llobregat in a coordinated operation with the Giudiziaria di Genova, who picked up 14 other suspects.
The investigation, run by the Italian DCPP anti-terrorism Della Polizia di Stato, identified the detainees as members of a terrorist cell calling itself ‘Gruppo Gabar’, a faction with close links to extremist groups in Pakistan and known to the 27-year-old terrorist who carried out a knife attack on the streets of Paris two years ago.
The 2020 attack coincided with the trial of two masked terrorists who murdered 17 people and injured many more during a three-day terrorist massacre in the French capital in January 2015.
Twelve of the victims were killed when the Kouachi brothers forced their way into the Charlie Hebdo offices and gunned down staff during an editorial meeting, and the attacks ended in a siege at a kosher supermarket two days later.
The Charlie Hebdo magazine caused outrage across the Muslim world for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
