ARCHIVED - Swedish fugitive wanted for money laundering is caught in Torrevieja
The suspect detained in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, allegedly laundered more than 220,000 euros
A fugitive on the run from Swedish authorities and facing a six-year prison sentence for laundering more than 220,000 euros has been nabbed in Torrevieja.
The 31-year-old went to great lengths to conceal the cash, more than 2,340,000 Swedish krona, through multiple bank accounts and transfers.
According to National Police sources, in March 2020 the detainee illicitly transferred the cash to a collaborator through the account of an Italian company with specific instructions on what he should do with the money.
The 'accomplice' then transferred the cash to a Nordic account in the name of another collaborator who began to make a series of transfers to the arrestee.
In total three other people were involved using accounts of "varied ownership", and the money was alternately withdrawn and transferred to "hide the fact that all this money came from crimes or criminal activities and thus avoid detection by the authorities of the claimant country".
As the Swedish authorities were gathering evidence, the 31-year-old fled the country, and suspecting he was hiding out in Alicante province, they contacted the National Police in Alicante which launched a search operation.
The fugitive, who has no criminal record in Spain, was located and arrested in Torrevieja and placed at the disposal of the National Court of Madrid.
