Swiss expat, 74, hacked to death by son-in-law in Mallorca
The elderly woman was repeatedly hit in the head with an axe at her Mallorca home
A senseless and brutal crime has shaken the quiet town of Colonia de Sant Jordi in Mallorca. A 74-year-old Swiss woman, who had made the island her home, was found brutally murdered in her country house, the victim of a vicious axe attack at the hands of her own son-in-law.
According to official sources, the victim was found in a pool of blood on Wednesday evening, September 25, and her 47-year-old Portuguese relative was arrested at the scene of the crime, in the Ses Colònies area of the town.
While awaiting the results of the post-mortem and a chance to formally interview the son-in-law, the Guardia Civil are busy taking statements from friends, relatives and neighbours and combing the house for clues to a motive behind the slaying.
What’s known so far is that the murder was committed at around 7.30pm in the house where the woman, her daughter and her boyfriend lived. It was a neighbour in the area who heard screams and, fearing that something serious had happened, alerted the emergency services.
Patrols from the Ses Salines Local Police and the Guardia Civil quickly arrived at the scene, where they found a gruesome crime scene. The elderly victim was immediately pronounced dead – her head had been smashed repeatedly with an axe and early investigations indicate that she never had a chance to defend herself.
The victim's daughter's boyfriend was in the house at the time and was arrested immediately as the alleged perpetrator of the crime. The suspect was taken to the Guardia Civil barracks, where he remains in custody awaiting questioning and being brought before a judge in the coming days.
The accused has several previous convictions for violent episodes and apparently his relationship with his mother-in-law was very strained.
