Tarragona headless baby confirmed as migrant boat victim
The tiny decapitated body washed up on a beach in northern Spain last week

The remains found a week ago on the Roda de Berà beach in Tarragona belong to an 8-month-old baby girl who was making the dangerous journey from Algeria to Spain with her parents in a migrant boat, investigators have confirmed.
A council worker discovered the infant’s headless and badly decomposed body on July 11. While several hypotheses were considered, mayor Pere Virgili said at the time that all indications pointed to a tragedy at sea, since the baby’s jacket and heavy clothing didn’t point to a typical beach accident.
According to the Guardia Civil, the deceased child has been linked by DNA to the patera which sank off the coast of the Balearic Islands on April 6 of last year. Fifteen men, women and children were aboard the tiny dinghy when it capsized.
The body of the baby’s mother was recovered from the water on the same day the boat sank, which allowed investigators to trace the infant’s roots.
The ill-fated migrant boat departed from Cherchel in Algeria on March 21 before sinking more than two weeks later. There were no survivors but to date, only eight bodies, including that of this baby, have been found.
