ARCHIVED - Teenage weather prodigy who predicted storm Filomena warns another DANA is headed for Spain
The young meteorologist foresees heavy rain and torrential storms in Spain next month
Widely believed to be the youngest ‘cabañuelo’ and meteorologist in Spain, 16-year-old Jorge Rey shocked the nation when he accurately predicted the onset of storm Filomena, a terrifying weather front which scarcely left an inch of Spain untouched at the beginning of 2021.
Practicing as an amateur meteorologist since the age of eight when he moved to Monasterio de Rodilla in Burgos, young Jorge’s forecasts are scarily accurate, and he has yet another warning for us: a violent weather front, often referred to as a DANA, is on the way to Spain, most likely hitting in September.
“August dries up the fountains and September takes away the bridges,” Jorge sums up in one chilling sentence.
Dating back to about 35,000 BC, the cabañuelas is a long-term weather prediction technique based on the observation of winds, clouds, tides and the behaviour of animals.
According to his prediction, "after this weekend of red warnings that we spent with very high temperatures in areas of the Mediterranean" there is likely to be an "approach of a DANA here in the Iberian Peninsula."
The weather phenomenon known as DANA, or cold drop, corresponds to a collision between a mass of cold air and a mass of warm air that gives rise to strong rains and storms.
In Spain, the regions of Murcia and Alicante are typically some of the hardest hit but Jorge’s forecast instead sees this potential storm bringing “a lot of rain” to "different areas of the northern peninsula, the Bay of Biscay and areas of Catalonia."
Jorge’s prediction is not the only gloomy outlook; earlier this week, Mario Picazo, former head of meteorology for Telecinco and current meteorologist for Eltiempo.es, warned that Spain is set to pay a harsh price for the current high temperatures once the autumn arrives.
Mr Picazo points to the fact that the Mediterranean Sea has reached unprecedented highs of 30ºC in recent weeks, turning it into a “water vapour factory” which will translate into floods later in the year.
Thus, on this point he agrees with Jorge: when temperatures drop at the end of summer, a DANA or intense cold drop could occur, bringing to Spain episodes of very intense and “very energetic” storms.
