Temperatures plummet across Spain: weather forecast Aug 28-31
The mercury will drop several degrees throughout the country as Spain welcomes autumn weather
Meteorological autumn begins this week and the weather in Spain is playing along, with falling temperatures forecast across the board along with persistent rains in the Bay of Biscay and strong winds in the northeast and on the Canary and Balearic Islands.
Although the first couple of days will remain warm, from mid-week onwards the thermometers will likely drop to values far cooler that normal for this time of year, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
On Monday August 28, the unstable weather is expected to continue in the extreme north of Spain with overcast skies and abundant rain in Galicia and Cantabria, which will spread to the Balearic Islands late in the afternoon.
The rest of Spain will be mostly clear or a little cloudy. Daytime temperatures will fall on the southeast, Alborán and Canary Islands coasts, with the mercury topping out at 32-34ºC in the Guadalquivir. The night will remain warm and thermometers will fail to drop below the mid-30s in the southeast.
Storm Betty will be replaced by storm Rhea in the western Mediterranean on Monday which could result in very strong gusts of wind.
Orange weather warning for rain and/or storms: Balearic Islands, Catalonia.
Yellow weather warning for rain and/or storms: Aragon, Navarra, Valencian Community.
The presence of several Atlantic fronts will cause the cloudy and overcast skies to continue in northern Spain on Tuesday August 29 with plenty of heavy rainfall in the north of Galicia and the Bay of Biscay. This will spread in a weaker way to neighbouring provinces and the Balearic Islands later in the day.
Most of Spain though can expect slightly cloudy skies with overcast intervals moving from northwest to southeast as the hours go by.
Nighttime temperatures will climb in the southeast and the Balearic Islands while the highs will increase inland and in much of the extreme south.
Orange weather warning for strong winds and/or adverse sea conditions: Catalonia, Valencian Community.
Yellow weather warning for strong winds and/or adverse sea conditions: Balearic Islands.
Very few changes are expected in northern Spain on Wednesday August 30 although showers and localised storms are forecast for early morning in the Balearic Islands and the Catalan coast, which could extend further south, although with less intensity, in the afternoon.
It will be slightly cloudy or clear in the rest of the country but the cloud cover will increase inland with a good chance of stormy intervals and even hail showers in the southeast.
Daytime temperatures increasing in the northern interior half of the country but decreasing in the southeast, with the mercury expected to exceed 35ºC only in the Guadalquivir.
No weather warnings have been issued for Wednesday.
In the northeast of Catalonia, the cloudy intervals with showers are expected to continue during the afternoon of Thursday August 31. Elsewhere, stable weather will predominate with mostly clear skies and a slight chance of early morning rain in eastern Cantabria.
Likewise, the day will begin a little cloudy in the southeast and the Balearic Islands with a possibility of some scattered showers in mountainous areas.
Nighttime temperatures will fall across the board with the exception of the extreme northeast while the highs will dip considerably in the southeast of Spain.
No weather warnings have been issued for Thursday.
