ARCHIVED - Ten social groups receive funds raised at Cartagena festival
More than 10,000 euros was donated although most of the Romans and Carthaginian fiestas in the Region of Murcia were cancelled
Around 10,000 euros from ticket sales for events held during the annual Carthaginian and Roman fiestas was awarded to ten local social bodies in the municipality on Friday November 26, despite the fact that the vast majority of the celebrations were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic in Murcia.
The festival is held in Cartagena each September and thousands of people flock to the area to experience the traditional medieval market or to watch the theatrical battles and parades, but this year, almost all the major events were suspended to avoid large crowds gathering and breaching social distancing guidelines.
Nevertheless, an award ceremony was held at the Town Hall this week and was richly attended by the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, and the councillor for Social Services, Mercedes García, as well as representatives from the Federation of Troops and Legions of Carthaginian and Romans.
The entities that have benefited from the funds are the Little Sisters of the Poor, AECC, Food Bank, Sodicar, San Pedro Asylum, Afibrocar, Abraham Project, Casa Cuna, Hippocampus and Cartagena for Charity.
