The CiuFRONT medieval museum in Lorca acquires the royal seat of honour of the Catholic Monarchs
This was the chair of Fernando and Isabel when they visited Lorca in 1488
The CiuFRONT medieval museum in Lorca, which is inside the old church of Santa María la Mayor, has acquired the royal seat of honour of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain and is hoping that it will be included in the main parade of the Fiestas of San Clemente, which commemorates the history of the city between 713 and 1488, when Fernando and Isabel visited Lorca.
The chair and other pieces were fashioned from beech wood and coated with 24-carat gold plating for the visit of the Catholic Monarch Fernando, who attended Mass in Lorca on 7th June 1488. During that visit royal privileges were conferred on Lorca, and although this pieces is not entirely original it is faithful to other copies like the one housed in the Alcázar of Segovia.
The seat is based on designs from the royal chapel in Granada, which was designed by the Catholic Monarchs’ architect Enrique Egas. At the top is a golden eagle flanked by the monograms of the letters Y and F (Ysabel and Fernando), whose marriage joined the royal houses of Castilla and Aragón and led to the unification of Spain following the expulsion of the Moors in 1492.
