ARCHIVED - The doggy bag plan by Murcia restaurants to reduce food waste
Thousands of takeaway containers are going to be distributed amongst bars and restaurants in the Region of Murcia
The Regional Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of the Region of Murcia (HoyTú) have joined an initiative to reduce food waste in bars and restaurants under the slogan ‘Take Away: Leftovers? Take them with you’.
According to HoyTú president, Jesús Jiménez, the main objective is to avoid food waste: “If our customers have food leftover when they consume in our establishments, the most normal thing is that they take it home and we must give them a ‘push’ to do so.”
The habit of taking away leftover food after a meal out is not as widespread in Spain as it is in other countries such as the United States, but the General Directorate of Consumption in the Region of Murcia is looking to change that by giving out takeaway containers to businesses in the hospitality sector.
In total, 10,000 container tubs and as many bags with the campaign logo are going to be distributed across the Region.
This proposal also aligns with the objectives included in the 2030 Agenda and the principles of the circular economy, which encourages and promotes sustainable consumption and waste reduction.
So if you’re feeling full during a meal out, don’t be afraid to ask for a doggy bag!
