It will not be quite so hot in Spain this week, and we can expect showers on and off, especially in the north

While this weekend in Spain saw weather more typical of early June, with a general increase in temperatures in much of the country to reach up to 30ºC in some areas like Murcia and Valencia, this week sees the clouds and rain return, especially to the north.

There are several Atlantic fronts passing across Spain that will increase atmospheric instability this week, meaning rain in Galicia, the Pyrenees and Cantabria. In the north of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands some precipitation is also expected.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued orange weather warnings along the northern coast on Monday March 13 and Tuesday 14 for high winds of up to 70kmh and waves of 4-5 metres high, while much of Castilla y León is on yellow alert for strong winds too.

Wednesday 15 will actually be fairly sunny all across the country, and no more weather warnings have yet been issued. Temperatures will drop a bit from what we had this weekend to more normal levels, though it will stay pleasantly mild, with maximums of around 17-20ºC in the north and a couple of degrees warmer in the south. In the Canary Islands, it will still be in the high 20s, close to 30ºC.

The rain from the Atlantic returns to Galicia on Thursday 16, and will sweep its way down across the whole of mainland Spain as we move into next weekend, and parts of the Canary Islands can expect to get wet too.
