ARCHIVED - This 26-year-old could be the next Mayor of Totana
Pedro José Sánchez, 26, is set to take the reins as Mayor of Totana after the former mayor, 63, died from Covid
The governing party in Totana, Ganar Totana IU, has already put forward a formal candidate to replace Juan José Cánovas as Mayor of Totana after he sadly passed away from coronavirus last week.
The mayoral candidate will be 26-year-old Pedro José Sánchez, current Councillor for Town Planning and Infrastructure. If ratified by the extraordinary plenary session on Wednesday January 26 at 7pm, Mr Sánchez will become the youngest mayor in the Region of Murcia.
Totana, in Southwest Murcia, has a population of 32,529 and is the only one of the 45 municipalities in the Region that has a mayor belonging to the left-wing Izquierda Unida political faction. Juan José Cánovas held the post until he caught Covid. He died on January 16 after 24 days in the ICU. In his absence, Verónica Carricondo took over the mayor’s duties, but she has decided to make way for Pedro José Sánchez as permanent replacement.
Who is Pedro José Sánchez?
The candidate for Mayor is a student of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena since 2013, where he is currently working on his final degree project. Since 2019, he has worked in the areas of Infrastructure, City Services, Environment, Water and Sewerage, Agriculture and Livestock for the local government.
He has also studied Urban Planning for three years, as well as other subjects such as Planning, Land Management and Architectural Heritage. He has been a scholarship member of the Urban Research Laboratory (LiUrb) and has worked on the analysis of the General Plan of Molina de Segura.
