Torrevieja hospital expansion finally gets the green light
More land for Torrevieja's overstretched hospital has been handed over after months of promises
Torrevieja Hospital is finally set for the expansion locals have been calling for, well, for years, after the land needed for the project was formally handed over this week.
The hospital serves an enormous catchment area that swells even further during the summer months, and anyone who's tried to get seen there recently will know the waiting lists and waiting times have become a real problem.
Both the local council and regional officials from the Generalitat have been promising the expansion for months, and this week's land transfer, covering an 11,400 square metre plot, marks the first real step towards making it happen.
The process has been anything but straightforward, though. When the Consell presented its draft budget for this year, the funding for the expansion was nowhere to be seen, despite all the earlier assurances. It's since been added back in, and amendments have now been submitted to make sure the investment goes ahead.
PSOE spokesperson in Torrevieja, Bárbara Soler, welcomed the news but was quick to point out it doesn't go far enough on its own. According to Ms Soler, the expansion is clearly insufficient to meet the growth Area 22 has seen in recent years, and continued investment will be needed to keep pace with demand.
Plans are also underway for a second health centre in Orihuela Costa, along with a new private clinic, both of which should help take some of the pressure off Torrevieja Hospital once they're up and running.
For now, though, all eyes are on the hospital expansion itself, a project residents have been waiting on for a long time and one that can't come soon enough for a department stretched well beyond what it was built to handle.
