Totana plans to transform old railway into vibrant greenway
The disused Totana commuter train station building could also be repurposed for public use
Totana Town Council has announced an exciting new initiative to transform the land currently occupied by the old railway line into vibrant green spaces and a potential greenway.
This proposal, which has been passed to ADIF (Spain’s railway infrastructure manager) and the Ministry of Transport for a final decision, seeks to repurpose the land that hasn’t been designated for the new railway line which is currently under construction.
This innovative idea follows a unanimous decision made by the Totana Council in July, and its goal is to breathe new life into the disused railway land and the old commuter train station building.
The proposed greenway, which would be part of a larger regional network, is a key part of the plan. The council has called on the Consortium of Greenways of the Region of Murcia to kickstart the necessary technical and documentation processes to define and delimit this future greenway section.
Totana is also requesting the transfer of all ADIF-owned buildings that will be left vacant once the new intermodal station is operational. The idea is to repurpose these properties for public use too.
Going forward, the plan is for the Totana Town Council to draw up projects for the restoration of the buildings using its own resources in a multi-year plan or by obtaining European or government funds.
