Tourist, 64, drowns in Orihuela Costa communal pool
The French man may have suffered a stroke in San Miguel de Salinas

A 64-year-old French man has died in Orihuela Costa after drowning in a community swimming pool in San Miguel de Salinas, between calles Los Pinos and Los Cerezos.
A call was made to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre at 12.40pm on Wednesday May 21 and an ambulance was immediately sent to the communal pool. However, paramedics could only confirm the man’s death when they arrived.
According to official sources, the holidaymaker had suffered a stroke back in January, but a full post-mortem will have to be carried out to determine the cause of death.
With the temperatures set to shoot up this weekend, the emergency services have taken the opportunity to warn bathers of the dangers of swimming, since most drawings are preventable. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid going in the water immediately after eating or spending a long time sunbathing, and swimmers should get out of the pool or sea if they feel dizzy or light-headed.
The majority of water-related fatalities affect men over the age of 55, and of course, special attention should be paid to young children, who can drown in very shallow water in just a few seconds.
A few days ago, a two-year-old girl died after drowning in a private pool in Finestrat. Her family members began basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), guided by a CICU doctor over the phone while emergency services arrived, and she was certified dead.
In April, a 69-year-old Belgian tourist died after falling into the water from his boat in Alicante's marina.
