ARCHIVED - Tourist who broke his neck in Magaluf swimming pool was drunk
The Norwegian tourist hit his head and was rushed to a Spanish hospital with spinal injuries
The 19-year-old Norwegian holidaymaker who broke his neck on Tuesday morning, May 24, after falling into the shallow end of a pool in the Spanish party resort of Magaluf, was drunk at the time, according to authorities.
Official reports indicate that the tragic accident happened at around 1.30am, just hours after the young man arrived on holiday. He had been partying with friends before falling head-first into just half a metre of water in a pool at Oceans Beach Club.
The tourist hit his head against the bottom and was rushed to the Son Espases intensive care unit in Mallorca in a very serious condition with suspected spinal cord injuries.
After investigating the incident, the Guardia Civil determined that the fall was accidental and had occurred as a result of alcohol consumption.
The Balearic Islands have been plagued with tragedies this month: An Irish tourist was badly injured in a fall from a Santa Ponsa hotel at the beginning of May and just a few days later, a British holidaymaker plunged from his death from a seventh-floor balcony in Magaluf. Investigators suspect that alcohol was a contributing factor in both of these accidents.
