Tourists join illegal rave on top of protected Spanish volcano
The foreigners now face fines of up to 200,000 euros for damaging the Fuerteventura natural landmark
The Calderón Hondo volcano on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura has suffered a new environmental attack after hoards of young people, many of them foreign tourists, held an illegal rave in this protected natural space of La Olivia.
According to local reports, the party at the summit of the protected mountain was attended by around 100 revellers with music provided by famous German DJ Nina Hepburn. The rave was advertised on social media and this helped the authorities track down at least some of the organisers, who now face fines of between 3,000 and 200,000 euros.
''The volcanic cone of Calderón Hondo constitutes a sensitive area for the conservation of threatened species included in the Canary Islands catalogue of protected species, which find in this area an ideal place for living and nesting. Therefore, the facts could imply an infraction due to nuisance, disturbance and destruction of habitats of wild species under special protection regime," a regional government spokesperson explained.
Qualified experts are now assessing the damage, the extent of which will determine the amount of the sanctions. However, early studies of the volcano sadly show possible “irreparable” harm to the cone.
''Insular ecosystems are fragile territories,'' added the Minister of the Environment, Carlos Rodríguez. ''When travelling through these environments, leaving the perfectly marked trails could cause permanent and irreversible damage. The recklessness of a few could irreversibly harm the natural heritage of the entire population."
On mainland Spain, the Region of Murcia was treated to a similarly unwanted party over New Year and Three Kings. Thousands of youngsters attended a rave in Fuente Álamo which lasted almost a week and dozens of fines were handed down for drug use and excessive alcohol consumption.
