ARCHIVED - Tragedy at the Feria de Murcia as man is gored to death by a bull
The man was supposed to deliver the final blow to a bull in the bullfight yesterday when he was gored several times
The Feria de Murcia 2022 fair in Murcia city has produced its first fatality this year, at a bullfight no less.
While the popular Murcia fair includes many harmless activities like fairground attractions, music, dancing, food and parades, there is also a traditional Spanish element of bull events, the latest of which has led to a man’s death on Monday September 12.
The terrible incident took place at La Condomina late in the evening yesterday when one of the bulls from the Daniel Ruiz bull-ranch, which should have been fought in third place, with the name of ‘Limpiador’, but which was returned to the pens because it was limping in the hindquarters, fatally gored one of the members of the bullring team who was going to stab it.
The event caught everyone by surprise, as the bull pen operator, according to the website ‘El Muletazo’, finished off the animal from above with his club and it fell to the ground, as if it had been gored, but when the butcher proceeded to start his work to ensure it was dead, the 472kg animal got up by surprise and gored him several times, one of them, which later proved fatal, in the belly, as well as in other parts of the body.
The people who remained in the horse yard of the bullring once the bullfight was over saw the great commotion caused when the victim was taken out of the pens, given the seriousness of the situation. The man, apparently named Santiago, was immediately taken to the Reina Sofia hospital by a waiting ambulance which was on standby near the bullring.
Shortly after midnight, though, it became known that the man, who had arrived in critical condition, had died in hospital. The doctors were able to save him from a first cardiorespiratory arrest, but, unfortunately, there was a second one about which nothing could be done.
More bullfights are scheduled for this weekend at the Feria.
