Tragedy hits Valencia again: At least three dead in Alicante apartment block fire
One of the victims of the Villajoyosa tragedy was a young child
An unspeakable tragedy has claimed the lives of at least three people, one of whom was a young child, and injured 15 others in the quiet Alicante town of Villajoyosa, close to Benidorm. According to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU), a fire broke out in a residential building on Marineros Avenue shortly after 2am on Monday March 4.The blaze erupted on the eleventh floor of a 24-storey apartment complex. The fierce flames quickly spread, prompting the evacuation of around 100 people and the confinement of others to their homes. The smoke and flames also affected common areas such as the landing.

Tragically, a couple and their minor son lost their lives in the inferno. Medical services were quick to respond, treating 15 people for smoke inhalation. Of those, seven were women aged between 24 and 67, and eight were men aged between 13 and 57.
One of the people treated was a police officer who was discharged at the scene, while the remaining 14 people were taken to the Marina Baixa hospital in the town.
The emergency services were swift to react, deploying a SAMU unit, an SVB unit and two conventional ambulances to the site. Three fire crews from the Alicante Provincial Council also attended to help extinguish the flames, and the blaze was finally brought under control at 7.34am.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, but the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil are investigating to determine what happened.
The President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, took to social media to express his condolences and offer support to the families affected by the tragedy.
The community is still reeling from another fire that devastated Valencia less than a fortnight ago. On Thursday February 22, a fierce blaze swept through a building of 138 homes located in the Campanar neighbourhood, killing 10 people.
