ARCHIVED - Truckers in Murcia refused permission to protest
Caravans of striking transport workers through Murcia city have been halted until March 25
The regional government in Murcia has refused to give truckers permission to protest until Friday March 25 following “unfavourable” reports from the Guardia Civil and Local and Nation Police about the disruption and safety concerns caused by previous caravans.
The transport sector strike has now entered into its ninth day, and trucks and tractors have been blocking roads and causing tailbacks throughout the Region, not to mention the supply chain breakdown that has resulted from picketers jamming up important trade routes across Spain.
In light of this, the Guardia Civil has reported that “it is not feasible to authorise the motorised demonstration in a caravan of some 800 vehicles, on its route along the A-30 and MU-30 motorways.”
Initially, the truckers had planned to protest on March 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25, driving at a crawl from Nueva Condomina to the San Gies Industrial Estate. The route included driving through busy sections such as Avenida del Reino de Murcia, Juan Carlos I, Plaza Circular, Avenida de la Constitución, Plaza Martínez Tornel, Teniente Flomesta, Paseo de Garay, Ronda Sur as well as part of the A-30 motorway.
Officials believe that “a risk to road safety can be generated, without prejudice to the express prohibition of low-speed circulation of certain vehicles on the proposed roads and traffic problems that may cause serious incidents in mobility on the roads that are the responsibility of the Traffic Section”.
The Local Police have added that multiple incidents have been reported during the previous protests, and that hospitals, emergency services and public transport have all been heavily disrupted. In addition, several altercations were reported between citizens and protestors last week, and the authorities fear that further convoys will further exacerbate an already fraught situation.
The issues posed by the Platform for the Defence of the National and International Road Freight Transport Sector are a long way from being resolved, however, and earlier this week the truckers rejected the government’s 500 million euro diesel discount deal, calling the measure “a joke.”
