ARCHIVED - Truckers in Spain declare national strike
Transport companies are facing “bankruptcy” amid soaring fuel costs in Spain
Truck drivers across Spain have been called to a national strike on Monday March 14 in the face of an “economic situation of total bankruptcy” and “totally precarious” working conditions, along with the ever-increasing price of petrol and diesel.
The ‘Platform for the Defence of the National and International Road Freight Transport Sector’, which has called the industrial action, claims that 90% of small and medium transport companies are faced with an impossible situation given the unstoppable rise in operating costs.

Although Spain’s Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, hopes to meet with representatives of the transport and logistics sector to discuss the rise in fuel prices, the International Road Transport Association (Astic) has warned of the “economic debacle and shortages” the country faces of the government does not act immediately.
In response to the news of the work stoppage, Ms Sánchez said on Friday March 11 that the central government maintains “constant contact” with the transport sector and that “in the coming weeks” it will hold several meetings to find solutions to the spiralling cost of fuel.
This will not be in time to prevent Spain’s 360,000 trucks from parking up on Monday however. Transport companies provide an essential service in this country, proving goods and produce to both private consumers and virtually all economic sectors. Around 70% of the movement of goods over land in Spain and 70% of exports to Europe are carried out by truckers.
