ARCHIVED - Twelve per cent of parents in Spain refuse to vaccinate children
Most parents in Spain are worried about side effects in children aged between 5 and 11
Reduced doses of the Pfizer vaccine suitable for children have begun to be distributed throughout Spain with autonomous communities set to start administering the first dose to children aged between 5 and 11 on Wednesday December 15. The campaign is not without its critics, however, with many believing that the risks associated with vaccinating youngsters far outweigh the benefits, considering that children have proven particularly resilient against Covid.
According to Appinio, 75% of parents have confirmed that they are in favour of vaccinating their children while 12.3% will refuse to have the jab administered to their children. A further 13.7% remain undecided.
There are currently 3.3 million children in this age group in Spain and for several weeks now the younger population has experienced the highest cumulative incidence rate by far. The Appinio study has found that parents of older children (between 12 and 17) are much more likely to agree to the vaccine, while only 5% of these mums and dads admitted that they have not been jabbed themselves, “nor will they.” Some 94.8% confirmed that they plan to accept the vaccination in the near future.
Unsurprisingly, the level of support is highly influenced by whether or not the children’s own parents are vaccinated or not, with only 5.7% of unvaccinated people claiming that they will vaccinate their younger children. Appinio has reported that the overall rejection rate of the inoculation of children under 11 years of age among unvaccinated parents is 77%.
The most common reason cited for refusing to vaccinate children (52%) is fear of the long-term side effects while 41% of people doubt the efficacy of the coronavirus jab in youngsters. Another 33% of people said that they would rather avoid the immediate adverse effects, such as nausea and muscle pain, while 25% believe that vaccinating young children is not necessary to control the evolution of the pandemic.
