ARCHIVED - Two Spanish beaches among top 10 in Europe
Spain’s beaches were ranked third and ninth in this year’s edition of the ‘Best of the Best’
With much of the world entering into the final stretches of the sixth wave of the pandemic, the progressive relaxation of entry restrictions to Spain and elsewhere, plus spring just around the corner, it’s little wonder that intrepid travellers are once again on the search for sun, sea and of course, sand.
For those looking for the perfect coastal getaway, TripAdvisor has once again published its Travellers’ Choice Beaches, recognising the Best of the Best beaches around the world, and Spain is gracing the top 10 list not once, but twice, in 2022.
This year, the Caribbean Grace Bay on the island of Providenciales in Turks and Caicos has ranked as the top beach in the world, knocking Australia’s Whitehaven from its perch. Grace Bay’s 20-kilometre stretch of white sands and crystal clear waters is followed by the beach of Varadero, in Cuba, and Turquoise Bay, of Exmouth, in Australia.
But staying closer to home, this year’s list of the best in Europe includes Playa de Muro in Mallorca, which took third place in the continental ranking, and Playa de Sotavento in Fuerteventura in ninth, which confirms once again the beauty of Spanish beaches. Also in the top 10 are two Italian beaches, two Portuguese, two British, two Greek and one from Cyprus and Portugal, respectively.
Playa de Muro, Mallorca, Balearic Islands
With turquoise waters which are shallow and protected from waves, Playa de Muro stretches for almost six kilometres in the Albufera Natural Park. Ideal for families, it is one of the best preserved virgin beaches in the Bay of Alcúdia, so it is not surprising that it is a firm tourist favourite and has been voted the third best beach in all of Europe. Its wheelchair-friendly wooden walkways means that it’s easily accessible and it has many facilities, including a large car park and restaurant.
Playa de Sotavento, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
The second Spanish beach among the best in Europe is Palya de Sotavento in Costa Calma, located in the southeast of Fuerteventura. Wild in appearance, its ten kilometres are actually the sum of five beaches that, at low tide, can be walked as if it were one. It is a quiet place, but windy, with large dunes and crystal clear and shallow waters, ideal for practicing water sports such as windsurfing.
