ARCHIVED - Two tourists killed by lightning strike on Spanish beach
One of the holidaymakers was killed instantly when lightning struck his sun parasol in Mallorca

Two holidaymakers have died following a sudden lightning strike on Cala Mesquida beach near Capdespera in the north-east of Mallorca.
The tragedy occurred shortly after 3.30pm on Thursday September 8 when a torrential storm abruptly hit the beach, very popular with tourists and locals for its white, sandy shores and crystal clear waters. According to official reports, one of the holidaymakers, was struck by lightning when he grabbed the metal pole of his parasol to pull it down. He died instantly.
The second victim, believed to be unknown to the first but lying nearby, reportedly began convulsing when the lightning struck; emergency responders attended to the man immediately but he was pronounced dead 40 minutes later.
Lifeguard Federico Parisin described the horrific moment when he realised that the first victim’s body was smoking from the blast:
“When we reached him his body was completely carbonised.
“We began to try to revive the other man while a fierce electrical storm was raging above us and fearing for our lives as well.”
Local Police who arrived on the scene covered the bodies with sun loungers and umbrellas while they waited for them to be removed to the morgue. No other casualties were reported.
The deceased are a Swiss man aged 65 and a German tourist, aged 51.
This tragedy has occurred just over a week after another freak weather incident claimed the life of a baby girl. The 20-month-old child was struck in the head by a 10-centimetre hailstone when a violent storm raged in the Catalan town of La Bisbal de l’Emporda for just 15 minutes. More than 70 other injuries were reported during the incident.
