UK Driving Licences: Over 70s can exchange expired permits
Spanish and British authorities have reached a further deal on exchanging UK driving licences
The UK Embassy in Spain has assured that some UK licence holders with expired UK driving licences who have encountered problems when trying to exchange their licence for a Spanish one – primarily those over 70 years of age – will be able to receive a special code to be able to make the exchange effectively.
In a statement they said, “We have been working to resolve this with the Spanish Government and are pleased to say that Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico [DGT] will be able to exchange expired UK licences, as long as they expired after the individual moved to Spain.”
This will be possible via the digital “check code” which will enable the DGT to verify that these licences are legitimate. These codes were already required to exchange any type of licence, but they will soon contain the additional information on expiration dates.
After a long post-Brexit saga during which Brits were barred from driving on UK driving licences in Spain and could not exchange their licences for Spanish ones as required by law, the two countries’ governments reached an agreement in March to allow UK citizens resident in Spain to exchange their licences again.
The check code, which shows that the licence has expired, will be valid for 21 days and can be attained on the Gov.uk website.
It now remains for the DVLA to update the codes to allow this additional information for expired licences to be included, and for the offices of the DGT to be informed they can now accept such licences.
Any UK national who is resident in Spain for more than six months and wishes to drive must do so by exchanging their Birtish licence for a Spanish one.
