UK holidaymaker, 57, rescued from drowning on Spanish beach
The British man ran into difficulty while swimming on a Mallorca beach
A 57-year-old British tourist had a lucky escape when he almost drowned while swimming on Santa Ponsa beach in southwest Mallorca on Friday September 8.
At around 3pm, the five lifeguards stationed on the coast heard a woman in the water screaming that her husband was in trouble, and one of the rescue workers swam out and pulled the man to safety.
Once on shore, the British holidaymaker began convulsing and his pulse was weak, so lifeguards began resuscitation manoeuvres. Thankfully, they were able to stabilise the man before paramedics arrived and transferred him to hospital.
The heroic efforts of the lifeguards to save the swimmer were met by wild applause from other beachgoers.
Sadly the outcome was far graver for another 56-year-old British man on the very same day in the Pollensa area of Mallorca. The victim suffered a heart attack while cycling up Cape Formentor and, despite the best efforts of rescue workers, the Briton passed away at the scene.
