ARCHIVED - Unhappy Christmas for travellers as Spanish airport strikes loom large
The unions have called 10,000 airport workers in Spain to strike over the holidays
Around 10,000 airport staff all across Spain have been called to strike by the unions through the Christmas holidays and into the new year. The CCOO union has announced industrial action that could last until Easter at Aena airports and control centres due to the “lack of response” from management to reinstate pre-pandemic wages and working conditions.
Work stoppages planned for the recent December long weekend were called off at the eleventh hour after the Ministry of Transport (Mitma) promised to address the concerns tabled by airport staff but according to those involved, “the delay in reaching the agreement is causing a lot of uneasiness among the workers and the unions present at the negotiating table.”
The main issue for workers is that even though air travel during 2022 recovered to pre-pandemic levels in many airports, and even exceeded it in some places, airport bosses have failed to reinstate their conditions correspondingly.
“Air traffic has recovered levels from 2019 (record year) and in some airports it has exceeded them; the distribution of dividends to private shareholders is also authorised and the workers of the Aena group demand, therefore, the recovery of what corresponds to us,” the union explained.
If the issue isn’t resolved in the coming days, a Spanish airport strike over the holidays seems inevitable.
At the moment, the strike days being proposed by CCOO are December 22, 23, 30 and 31 as well as January 6 and 8 of next year, a move which would cause untold disruption to the travel plans of countless holidaymakers over the festive season.
