ARCHIVED - Valencia removes Metro station names in Spanish: the battle continues for regional identity in Spain
The Valencia Government will also eliminate all references to King Juan Carlos I
In a bid to re-establish regional identity in Valencia, from next week the Generalitat will remove all Metro station names in Castilian and replace any reference to the King Emeritus Juan Carlos I, under investigation by the Spanish tax authorities, with the name Neptú.
Valencia President, Ximo Puig, claims the move is aimed at establishing "linguistic normalisation", by "simplifying the stop and station names, improving their identification and adapting to the urban changes of the city and the metropolitan area".
There are literally thousands of Metro signs, timetables and maps meaning carrying out the name changes will be a mammoth task, and the government has not made public exactly how much the changes will cost the public coffers.
The removal of names in Spanish will be carried out in a "progressive manner", coinciding with the commissioning of the new Metrovalencia Line 10 (called Alacant-Natzaret) for "reasons of efficiency" because it will involve renewing the signage of the entire network.
The proposed changes affect a total of 23 facilities, nine of them Metro, 13 trams and one intermodal facility.
With regards to the Metro, on Line 1, Villanueva de Castellón will be renamed Castelló to reflect the new nomenclature of the town. Line 2, Torre del Virrei will become Gallipont-Torre del Virrei; Benaguasil 1 will become Fondo de Benaguasil; and Benaguasil 2, the station closest to the town centre, will become Benaguasil.
Lines 5 and 7, Aragón will be renamed Aragó and on Lines 3 and 9 Alboraya-Palmaret will be renamed Alboraia Palmaret and Alboraya-Peris Aragó will be renamed Alboraia Peris Aragó.
The Metro station currently called Amistat-Casa de la Salud will return to its original name of Amistat.
In the case of Valencia tramway, Grau Canyamelar will be changed to Grau La Marina; Mediterrani to Canyamelar; Marina Reial Joan Carles I to Neptú; La Marina to Cabanyal; Les Arenes to Platja Les Arenes; Eugènia Vinyes to Platja Malva-rosa; Serrería to Beteró; Primat Reig to Trinitat; Estadi del Llevant to Estadi Ciutat de València; TVV to À Punt; and Santa Gemma-Parc Científic UV to Parc Científic.
"This way a better identification of the stops will be achieved and more relevance will be given to the neighbourhoods," according to the regional government which commissioned a study of 'linguistic standardisation' carried out by the University of Valencia.
And finally, the Metro stops Tarongers and Facultats will become Tarongers-Ernest Lluch and Facultats-Manuel Broseta, with the addition of the full names of two Valencian university professors assassinated by the Spanish terrorist group ETA.
