ARCHIVED - Valencia to extend Covid passport to all bars, cinemas and gyms
Once the measure is formally approved it will remain in place in Alicante until January 31
The Valencian government has applied to the Supreme Court for permission to extend the use of the Covid passport to all hospitality establishments, regardless of official capacity. Until now, only bars and restaurants that catered for more than 50 people had to request proof of vaccination, a negative test or of having overcome the virus for entry.
The president of the community, Ximo Puig, announced the measure on Monday afternoon, December 20, and added that the Covid pass would be expanded to all public areas where food is consumed, such as cinemas and party venues, in addition to swimming pools, sports centres and gyms.
The regulations will come into effect as soon as the Supreme Court approves them and remain in force until January 31.
Justifying his decision, Mr Puig pointed out that in just one month, infections, hospital and ICU occupancy rates have tripled.
"Winter begins in a more complex situation than we expected", the president said, although he clarified that "we are on alert, but not in alarm because what we are experiencing is serious but it is not comparable to what we have overcome".
Mr Puig has recognized that "this Christmas cannot be as we would like" and that, since “infections occur in closed spaces”, the decision to extend the Covid cert to all bars and restaurants is the prudent one.
The measure comes just 48 hours before the online meeting between President Sanchez and the regional leaders to discuss additional precautions in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.
In addition, the Valencian Community has announced a plan to accelerate the booster vaccination in those over the age of 60 as well as those inoculated with AstraZeneca and Janssen.
