A sperm whale measuring between 8 and 10 metres long was found washed up on the Playa de Nogales beach in Puntallana in La Palma, in Spain’s Canary Islands this Sunday morning, May 21.
The specimen weighs around 10 or 12 tons and the local authorities stated that they could not remove the animal from the beach edge immediately due to inclement sea conditions.
A video taken of the animal lying on the shore shows lacerations on its back that may have been caused by contact with a boat. However, a necropsy by staff at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will confirm the exact cause of death.
