Brit, 44, found dead in Lanzarote after missing flight
Robert Campbell failed to board his flight home from Spain after his first ever holiday abroad
A 44-year-old British man has been found dead on the Spanish Island of Lanzarote after failing to turn up for his flight back to the UK with a pal on Thursday May 11. Scot Robert Campbell was taken to hospital after falling ill shortly before the journey home but was given a clean bill of health by doctors and released a short time later.
He became separated from his friend at the airport and two panicked family members flew to the island capital of Las Palmas when Robert couldn’t be contacted by phone.
Sadly, Robert’s sister Margueritte Devine confirmed that her brother had been found dead on Tuesday May 16 in Lanzarote, on his first ever foreign holiday. She has since set up a GoFundMe page to help transport Robert’s body back to Uddington in South Lanarkshire.
Ms Devine wrote: “Sadly our brother died in Lanzarote yesterday and we're left with a bill of [between] 6 and 10 thousand pounds in funeral fees.
“We are desperate to get him home asap so I am writing this to reach out from my heart to help us bring him home.”
Another devastated relative shared photos of Robert and wrote: “Gutted to hear the passing of our Uncle who was reported missing in Lanzarote has been found dead. First time going on holiday and not returning. R.I.P.”
Shockingly, Robert is the second Lanarkshire man to go missing in Lanzarote in recent months. Back in March, 53-year-old Gary Watson disappeared after flying to Spain to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and hasn’t been seen since. His family, too, made their way to the island to conduct a search but have since admitted they believe he is dead.
