For more than a week, drivers using the AP-7 motorway near Pilar de la Horadada have been doing double takes at the sight of an overturned car sitting just off the road near the tunnel. The wrecked vehicle, left upside down and unattended, has raised eyebrows and sparked plenty of speculation, especially among beachgoers heading to the coast.
Now, traffic authorities have revealed the reason the car hasn’t been moved: the driver is missing.
According to the Alicante Traffic Operations Centre (COTA), the crash was first reported days ago, but despite efforts by the Civil Guard and road traffic services, they’ve not yet been able to contact the owner. Until the person responsible is identified, the car can’t legally be removed.
It turns out the vehicle carries foreign plates, leading investigators to believe it may have belonged to a tourist in the area. The lack of Spanish registration is complicating the search, as COTA explained: “The car overturned. We don’t know if it was because he was under the influence of some substance or alcohol or because he didn’t have insurance. He just left it there. He didn’t remove it and left; he abandoned it at the scene of the accident.”
Without confirmation of valid insurance or a report from the owner, the vehicle must stay where it is for now.
“We are doing all kinds of inquiries to get in touch with him,” said a COTA spokesperson, adding that officials currently have very little to go on. “We don’t have much information about the accident, the car or its owner.”
So far, the vehicle remains in place, turning heads on the busy coastal route and leaving drivers to wonder how long it will take before the mystery is solved.
So, if you’ve been wondering why there’s still an overturned car next to the Pilar de la Horadada tunnel, now you know; authorities are still trying to track down the missing driver before it can be removed.
