WATCH: Spearfisher caught using harpoon gun in bathing area on Orihuela Costa
Orihuela Local Police say the activity poses a serious risk to swimmers and carries fines of up to €760
A diver was caught red-handed by Orihuela Local Police spearfishing with a harpoon gun in a designated bathing area on Orihuela Costa.
The incident happened during a routine patrol by the force's Maritime Unit, which monitors the coastline throughout the summer. Officers intercepted the diver after spotting him fishing in an area reserved for swimmers.
Police say spearfishing is strictly prohibited in bathing areas because it poses a danger to people using the beach. Anyone caught breaking the rules can face fines of up to €760.
The force also used the incident to remind beach users that boats and other vessels are not permitted to navigate through designated bathing areas, where fines can reach €2,000.
With Orihuela Costa's beaches packed during the summer months, Local Police are urging residents and visitors to follow the regulations so everyone can enjoy the coastline safely.
