ARCHIVED - WATCH: Spain Day parachute jumper becomes tangled in massive flag mid-air
The skydiver somehow managed to free himself before landing in front of the King of Spain

Thousands of people have turned out to Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid to watch the famous military parade that celebrates Dia de la Hispanidad, or Spain Day, on October 12. But the celebrations nearly came to a nasty end when a skydiver became entangled in a Spanish flag high above the ground.
Parade attendees watched the sky with bated breath as the military jumpers leapt from an aircraft right in front of the VIP box holding the King of Spain and other important dignitaries. It soon became apparent that all was not well, as one of the skydiver’s legs was wrapped tightly around a 56-metre flag.
Thankfully, the quick-acting diver managed to untangle himself before returning to earth safely to roaring applause.
It could be as much for the excitement as national pride that so many people clamour to watch the capital’s parade each year, as it is rarely without some sort of drama. Back in 2019, at the last parade held before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, another parachutist descending with the Spanish flag smashed into a lamppost right before landing.
Corporal Luis Fernando Pozo, from the Parachute Brigade (Bripac), was incredibly unhurt, and struggled back to his feet among cheers from the watching crowd, as well as King Felipe and his family.
Que bestia el paracaidista abriendo la bandera en el aire, que se había enredado. ¡Qué huevos el paracaidista! pic.twitter.com/F3tcLc8ZKG
