ARCHIVED - WATCH: Torrential rains leave flooding and destruction in Cartagena, Mazarron and La Manga
Storms, hailstones, floods and heavy rainfall caused widespread damage in Murcia this weekend
The rains forecast for this weekend in Murcia were heavier than expected, leaving flooding in several parts of the Region, including Mazarrón, Cartagena and La Manga.
A red alert was activated on Sunday, with more than 50 litres of rainwater per square metre falling in just one hour in some areas surrounding the Mar Menor, and even hail in Cartagena.

In total, there were some 194 calls made to the Emergency Coordination Centre 112 for matters related to the rains and storms, most of them due to a lack of water drainage, obstacles in the road and people who needed rescuing from cars or homes.
The municipalities where most of the distress calls came from were Cartagena, Murcia, La Unión and Alcantarilla, with videos shared online showing cars washed away down the streets in the regional capital.

Several roads were closed to traffic in Mazarrón, including and in Cartagena Calle Sifón was also flooded, meaning the camp of the Carthaginians and Romans at the Carthagineses y Romanos fiesta had to be evicted and all the events planned for Sunday afternoon cancelled.
Meanwhile, one man in central Murcia has been reported dead as a result of the flooding after a deluge came and swept him from his house where he was sleeping on the sofa at 2am on Monday morning, and carried him 300 metres down the street, where his body was found.
New yellow weather warnings have just recently been put in place everywhere in the Region for this Monday, lasting for the whole day, but for the rest of this week the weather is expected to be bright, sunny and dry, with widespread sunshine across the whole of Murcia.
