Wednesdays in July and August, guided visits to the Roman amphitheatre of Cartagena
Limited afternoon tours are being held while excavation work continues at the amphitheatre
Over the last 40 years or so the city of Cartagena has excavated more and more of the Roman buildings which form such an important part of its remarkable historical and cultural heritage, but despite the work which has made it possible to visit the Roman Theatre, the Forum district and many other sites, it is possible that the best is yet to come.
Work is now under way to unearth the Roman amphitheatre, a structure which was far larger than the theatre and which lies partially below the old bullring. It is only possible to see around a quarter of the structure, including the parts in which lions and gladiators were kept before being released into the arena, but while efforts continue to make more of it visible it has been announced that limited visits are to take place on the remaining Wednesdays of July and August 2024.
The visits will be led by official tour guides and a maximum group size of 30 has been established, with prior registration required online here – click on the date of your preferred Wednesday and then choose between the visiting times of 18.45 and 20.00. No more than 4 people can register at any one time and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Training shoes or similar are recommended and anyone arriving in sandals or flip-flops will be denied entry, while of course visitors are advised to bring plenty of drinking water.
Each visit lasts approximately 1 hour.
