Which supermarkets are open in Spain this Christmas?
Most grocery stores in Spain will operate on reduced hours over the festive season
Even the most organised among us can get caught out over the holidays and need to make a last-minute run to the supermarket. It’s all the more tricky this festive season since Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, when many stores operate on reduced schedules anyway.
To ensure you’re fully stocked over the holidays, we have a breakdown of the opening hours of all the most popular supermarkets on December 24 and 25 and over New Year, but it’s always a good idea to check on the official websites or in store to be sure.
Remember, all these stores will return to their usual opening hours on December 26 since Boxing Day is not celebrated as a holiday in Spain.
Mercadona
For the past few years, the Valencian supermarket chain has closed its doors throughout the festive season but this Christmas, Mercadona will remain open to the public on Sunday December 24, as well as on New Year’s Eve (December 31), from 9am until 3pm.
However, Mercadona will be closed on Monday December 25, Monday January 1 and Saturday January 6, which correspond to Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Three Kings Day, respectively.
Carrefour
Opening hours for Carrefour will vary according to location but in general, the French supermarket will be open until 8pm on December 24 and 31. These stores will remain closed throughout December 25, January 1 and 6.
Alcampo
Alcampo will also keep different hours depending on the town, closing at either 6, 7 or 8pm on Christmas Eve. On December 31, some establishments may remain open until 10pm but on Christmas Day, as well as January 1 and 6 next year, most stores will be closed for business.
Lidl
On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Lidl will operate holiday hours, opening from 10am until 3pm but like most other supermarkets, the German chain will stay closed on December 25, as well as on January 1 and 6.
Dia
Dia supermarkets will be open on Sundays December 24 and 31, with holiday hours from 10am to 3pm. Most stores will remain closed to the public on December 25 and January 1 and 6.
Aldi
Aldi stores usually open between 9am and 9.30pm but on December 24 and 31, the hours will be reduced to 10am until 3pm. Aldi supermarkets throughout Spain will close on December 25 and January 1 and 6.
