ARCHIVED - Widespread protests in Spain against Covid passports
Demonstrators took to the streets in Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid
Thousands of people took to the streets in Spain last weekend to protest against the introduction of the so-called Covid passport, a measure which has been implemented in several communities to stem the spread of coronavirus and as a particular reaction to the emergence of the new Omicron strain.
In the Valencian Community, the measure came into force on December 4 and requires patrons of all bars and restaurants with a capacity greater than 50 to present proof of vaccination, a negative test or of having recovered from the virus. The Region of Murcia also recently implemented the unpopular measure.
On Saturday December 11 demonstrators converged at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and marched through Calle Colón and Calle Xàtiva. The majority of participants didn’t wear masks and carried posters with slogans such as ‘No to the Nazi pass’, ‘Vaccine kills’ and ‘No to the political, social and health dictatorship’.
On the same day, around three thousand people gathered at Plaza Universitat in Barcelona before making their way through Plaza Urquinaona to Plaza San Juan. The mostly maskless protesters carried signs reading ‘Health passport, totalitarian state’ and ‘Respect our choice’.
The Covid passport is now required to access the interior of bars, restaurants, gyms, nursing homes and nightlife venues throughout Catalonia.
