ARCHIVED - Covid passport leads to 74% increase in vaccinations: Valencia region update December 7
1.5 million Covid certificates were downloaded on the Costa Blanca between December 1 and 4
The introduction of the compulsory Covid passport in the Valencia region, which came into effect one minute after midnight on Saturday December 4, led to a 74% increase in the number of first dose vaccinations during the last week of November, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
The certificate is now required to enter leisure and catering establishments with a capacity of more than 50 people; spaces dedicated to recreational activities and gambling (such as casinos) with food; events and celebrations with more than 500 attendees where it is not always possible to wear a mask; and for visits to hospitals and elderly residences.
During the first three weeks of November, static and mobile vaccination points received a steady trickle of people interested in getting vaccinated, and the administration of first doses was around 4,600 per week with a steady but modest increase of just below 1% per week.
But in the fourth week of November, following the regional governmnet's announcement that it was poised to make the Covid passport mandatory at certain venues and establishments, the rate of first-dose vaccination accelerated significantly.
In fact, last 'Black Friday' weekend, a total of 2,190 doses were administered at the walk-in mobile points alone, and the opening hours had to be extended to be meet the demand.
The week closed with 7,524 first doses administered (compared to 4,331 in the first week of November) an increase of 74%.
By provinces, Valencia closed the first week of November with 2,052 first doses administered compared to 3,476 in the last week (up 69%); Castellón went from 379 to 1,123 (up 196%) and Alicante, from 1,900 to 2,925 (a rise of 54%).
In the region as a whole, 22,344 people received their first jab in November, and by December 4, a total of 4,109,105 Covid certificates were downloaded, either to prove vaccination, diagnosis or recovery.
Nearly 38%, a total of 1,543,615 people, requested a Covid passport between December 1 and 4, and of these, 1,410,090 were downloaded online. The previous month, 1,699,998 certificates were issued, 1,324,762 rather than at a health centre, via the GVA +Salut app.
