ARCHIVED - Wild boar calves stroll the streets of Barcelona for more than two hours
Wild boar populations are booming in Barcelona and the rest of Spain and the animals are known to carry disease
Two wild boar calves ran riot through the streets of Barcelona for two hours on Monday April 25 before they were eventually captured and euthanised.
Witnesses reported that the baby boars were trotting nervously along the sidewalk on the busy Avenida Meridiana, close to the Renfe and Metro train station of La Sagrera, and that stunned pedestrians were quickly moving out of their path.
The frightened animals were posing a risk to passing traffic, which prompted officers from the Urban Guard to herd them across the Meridiana to the Jardines de Elche square and eventually corner them on Calle Garcilaso.
Sources from the Barcelona City Council confirmed that the young boars were first spotted at 7.30am, at which point the Wild Fauna Ecopathology Service (SEFAS) was activated.
“The wild boars, two specimens, have been captured by the veterinary services after 9.30am on Garcilaso street,” the council said in a statement this morning. “They have put them to sleep with a dart, they have been euthanized and taken to the UAB, where necropsies will be carried out.”
The process of euthanizing the boars is in line with the current security protocols; their population in the urban areas of Barcelona has boomed in recent years and studies have shown that the animals are carriers of Campylobacter and, to a lesser extent, Salmonella, which have proven to be resistant to antibiotics.
