Wintery weather this week: Spain forecast Feb 26-29
Atlantic storms will result in plummeting temperatures and abundant rainfall in Spain
Weather warnings on Tuesday February 27
So far this year, Spain has been experiencing remarkable spring-weather with higher than normal temperatures and a worrying lack of rain, but over the next few days winter will return with a bang due to several inflows of maritime polar air masses.
Last week, the mercury dropped and snow returned to northern Spain and this instability is set to continue, along with plummeting temperatures, strong winds, rough seas and plenty of rain.
Monday February 26
A new storm will sweep northern Spain on Monday, bringing cold fronts and intense winds that will blow from the west and north. Rain and snow will be widespread in these areas and the thermometers will drop across the board, barely touching 20ºC in the likes of Murcia and Alicante.
Rough seas and intense winds will force weather warnings to be activated in the north of the country and much of the Mediterranean area.
Tuesday February 27
The storm will pass through the Mediterranean, leaving abundant rainfall in the east and in the Balearic Islands. Temperatures will continue to fall, descending well below 20ºC in most parts and dropping into single digits at night.
It will be a fairly cloudy day overall and the winds will persist, with several yellow and orange alerts still in place as a result of the gusts.
Wednesday February 28
The anticyclone located to the west of Spain is expected to extend on Wednesday, so most of the rainfall will be confined to the Balearic Islands and the Cantabrian Sea, but even this will ease off towards the evening.
Daytime temperatures will climb by a degree or two and while the west and northwesterly winds will persist, they will be far less intense than on previous days. However, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and the Valencian Community remain on alert.
Thursday February 29
The heavy cloud cover will tend to decrease on the last day of the month, especially in the west of Spain. Temperatures will continue to creep up in almost the entire country, sharply in the east, and any night frosts should be confined to the northern and southeastern mountain systems.
So far, no weather warnings have been issued for Thursday.
