A young man has died after crashing into the rocky cliffs in Carboneras in Almeria while out paragliding on Wednesday August 24. A witness saw the victim plough into the mountainside before falling to the rocks close to the sea in an area known as Mirador de Granatilla and called the emergency services.
Maritime Rescue staff rushed to the scene of the accident alongside members of the Guardia Civil, Local Police and the Levante Almeria Firefighters Consortium but sadly they could only confirm the death of the paraglider from multiple traumas.
This tragic accident is only one of many fatal paragliding incidents in Spain this summer: at the beginning of August, Madrid resident perished when he crashed in Pico Mondalindo in the town of Bustarvejo and back in June, a 45-year-old paraglider lost his life after he smashed into a mountain in Alicante.
What to know before you fly
Paragliding is quickly becoming a favoured past-time in Spain and beaches around the country are dotted with the colourful equipment every summer. However, this is a dangerous extreme sport and those who practice it take their lives into their hands each time they fly.
Before taking to the skies, the experts recommend checking materials meticulously and taking note of the weather and air currents that could blow a paraglider off course. Likewise, the terrain surrounding the take-off and landing area should be scrutinised, avoiding any high trees or bushes that could ensnare the equipment.
